Narrative

The subglacial basin lies mainly with the eastern sector of the Australian Antarctic Territory but also crosses Terre Adélie into the western sector of the Australian Antarctic Territory. It extends NNE-SSW and is broken by the Southern Cross Subglacial Highlands, partly underlying Talos Dome and including the Webb Subglacial Trench. In association with Wilkes Land to the west named after Lieutenant (later Rear Admiral) Charles Wilkes, US, Commander of the US Exploring Expedition, 1838-42 in Vincennes and with five other ships in company.
